Two-Tier Floating Macrame Shelf

This shelf was inspired by a macrame shelf found on Amazon.com. But, I wanted to make this into a freestyle project.

I started with a wooden ring and created lark's head knots around the entire circle. I secured the loose ends by super gluing the ends in place. Next, I took 8 cords and folded them in half, using the middle of the strands to loop over the wooden circle. Once I got them secured in place, I created a large square knot.

This square knot allowed the 8 strands to divide into two sections of 4 cords. Each of these sections were then made into spiral knots to create the first part of the floating shelf. I wasn't quite sure how long I wanted the first half to be. At the end of the square knots, each section was split into 2 cords, creating 4 groups of 2.

From here, it became tricky. I strung each section of 2 cords through the wooden shelf. As I strung the cords through, I placed a wooden bead through the cords and then created a temporary knot to hold each corner in place as I proceeded with the next section. After all four cords were completed, I adjusted each corner until it was level. To secure this shelf level, I made a simple knot under each wooden bead (4).

I then skipped some space down to create a spiral knot series. This section was about 3-4 inches long. I then split the two spiral knots into 4 groups of 2 once again. I then repeated the same steps before: looped each corner through the drilled hole in the shelf, added a wooden bead, and created a temporary knot after each section was worked on. After I adjusted each corner to make the second shelf level, I secured the knot tighter to hold things in place.

Next, I created a long sent of spiral knots to create the bottom tassel details. After each spiral knot was created (4), I secured each corner with a gathering knot.

The last touch was a simple brush of the ends to create a bit of flare/tassel look.
